I Wasted $9,400 on Digital Products Before I Learned This 3-Filter Rule

I wasted $9,400 selling digital junk.

11 products. 14 months. Almost zero sales.

– 3 Canva template packs nobody asked for
– An “AI prompt vault” with 500 prompts
– A side hustle ebook I wrote in a weekend
– A productivity planner I didn’t even use

The problem wasn’t the platforms. Gumroad, Canva, Notion — they all work.

The problem was ME picking products based on vibes instead of validation.

So I built the 3-Filter Rule. Now every product I launch passes this test BEFORE I create a single page:

1️⃣ PAIN — Is there a problem people are already paying to solve?
Search Reddit, TikTok comments, and Gumroad bestsellers. If nobody’s complaining about it, nobody’s buying it.

2️⃣ PROOF — Are similar products already selling?
Look for 3+ creators making real money in that micro-niche. Competition = demand. An empty market is usually an empty wallet.

3️⃣ PRICE — Can you charge $17–$47 without flinching?
Digital products under $10 burn you out. Over $97 needs trust you don’t have yet. The sweet spot is the impulse-buy zone.

My first product that passed all 3 filters?

A Notion CRM for freelance designers. Made more in 3 weeks than my 11 flops made in a year.

The lesson: stop creating. Start validating.
